How is RF microneedling different from traditional microneedling?
Microneedling employs a device with a number of ultra-thin sterile needles that press into the skin to produce micro-punctures at the right depth of the dermis with minimal discomfort. These punctures will close and heal within a few hours to a few days. But it is what the micro- punctures initiate in the body that makes microneedling such a rejuvenating cosmetic procedure. The tiny punctures stimulate the body’s natural healing response and initiate a higher-than-normal production of collagen and elastin, effectively tightening the skin and reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, and acne scarring. When the procedure is in progress, and the micro-holes have been placed, other positive boosters, nutrients, and growth factors can be applied for even more revitalizing results, such as PRP (platelet-rich plasma), peptides, stem cells, or exosomes.
Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling adds the element of radiofrequency energy onto the already productive and stimulating microneedling procedure. The energy is delivered via the small needles to further enhance skin tightening, scar, and wrinkle reduction. The amount of radiofrequency energy (which converts into heat energy) can be adjusted to better suit certain skin conditions or certain areas of the body, and the depth of its application can also be adjusted to reach deeper layers of the dermis. The heat stimulates further production of collagen and some doctors suggest it is the only way to make the positive effects last. Traditional microneedling will deliver a positive effect over a few treatments; adding radiofrequency energy amplifies the results in a shorter amount of time. With RF microneedling, the results are produced faster, are more dramatic, and are longer-lived.

Both procedures are appropriate for all skin types and skin tones, as RF microneedling is “color-blind” — by delivering heat below the skin’s superficial surface, the pigment is protected making this procedure safer with darker skin types, something not possible with laser resurfacing.
Patients opting for microneedling would require more procedures and would be generally unable to reach the even greater results available with RF microneedling. However, substantial improvement is still possible. Traditional microneedling is good for slower and more subtle rejuvenation. If you are looking for amplified results, RF microneedling is recommended for enhancing the overall tone and texture of the skin as it better facilitates the production of collagen and elastin.
What is different about the INTRAcel Pro?
We are excited to offer the INTRAcel Pro, which takes radiofrequency (RF) treatments to a whole new level of performance and comfort by injecting RF directly into the deep dermis bypassing the superficial skin surface. Stated very simply, INTRAcel Pro is able to go deeper, thus have more positive effects, and do so more comfortably. Here is how.
Typically, RF microneedling machines use either monopolar or bipolar technologies. Bipoloar machines, like Vivace, VirtuRF, or Morpheus8, run a RF current between the needles. This means the energy stays close to the surface and is not allowed to penetrate deeper. The RF current delivered by monopolar machines, like INTRAcel Pro, leave the needles and travel into the deepest parts of the dermis where the most effects may be had. To compensate, Vivace and VirtuRF must insert needles deeper than INTRAcel to attempt to deliver the RF current to the same depth, but this is very uncomfortable for the client.
Using monopolar, INTRAcel Pro only needs to advance the needles a short distance into tissue to instantly heat the full dermal thickness with higher power and short pulse times. This leads to greater comfort, less bleeding and no down time. In addition, it works much better by treating a greater volume of the dermis resulting in more fibroblast activity – which is what you need to build collagen and elastin in the skin. While monopolar seems to provide the best results in general, INTRAcel also offers bipolar energy for those times when it might be preferable. INTRAcel covers all bases!
Studies have shown that faster needle insertion leads to less discomfort. INTRAcel Pro has patented technology for introducing needles painlessly and with greater speed and precision. INTRAcel Pro provides the greatest patent comfort of any microneedling technology for greater patient satisfaction.
INTRAcel Pro also uses Impedance Monitoring (IM). Using IM means constant RF delivery and uniform results. Use in Monopolar mode results in very uniform treatments and avoids the checkerboard post recovery pattern seen with Bipolar devices. Clients will have an immediate uniform post recovery flushing appearance that will fade in a couple of hours and will have no downtime. Results may vary with patient and settings, but will always be more uniform, more comfortable, and less downtime than Bipolar treatments.
What should I expect during my RF microneedling?
During radiofrequency (RF) microneedling at Natural Radiance, you relax in a comfortable, reclining chair while we apply numbing cream to the area. Your specialist applies a hand-held device to your skin needling treatment. The treatment is not painful. Each treatment could take about 30-60 minutes, but every patient is different. You will have some redness for a few hours. We just ask that you avoid makeup, sun exposure, and exercise for the rest of the day after your treatment.
